The horn violet ( Viola cornuta ) is a species of the violet ( Viola ) genus . The species hybridizes with Viola velutina , the garden pansy ( Viola x wittrockiana ) and Viola stojanowii .

description

The horned violet is a perennial , herbaceous plant that becomes 20 to 30 centimeters high. It forms a rhizome . The ovoid, pointed and notched leaves are usually 2 to 3, rarely up to 5 centimeters long and hairy on their underside. Their stipules are mostly serrated, sometimes more or less deeply cut. The flowers have a diameter of usually 2 to 3, rarely up to 4 centimeters, and are purple or lavender. Your slightly curved spur becomes 10 to 15 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from May to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20, 22, 42.

Occurrence

The horned violet occurs in the Pyrenees and northern Spain on rocky meadows and alpine meadows at altitudes up to 2500 meters. It is now naturalized in southern and western Central Europe

The horn violet is mainly used for graves, large-scale plantings, flower beds and window boxes. There are numerous varieties with different flower colors from yellow to blue and blue-violet to purple-violet, as well as red, white and almost black tints. The varieties are propagated partly by means of sinkers and cracks, and partly by seeds. Varieties such as 'Altona', 'Angerland', 'Cleo', 'Famos', 'Germania', 'Hansa', 'John Wallmark', 'Lady Scott', 'Louis', 'Kathrinchen', 'Milkmaid' are propagated vegetatively , 'Rebecca', 'Winona Crawthorne' and 'Woodgate'. The varieties 'Admiration' (dark blue), 'Blue Beauty' (bright blue), 'Blue Perfection' (light blue) are generatively increased . They will be available in stores from mid-February as they can withstand short periods of frost well. 'Gustav Wermig', 'Perfecta Alba' and 'Rubin' (dark wine red).
