Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani

Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani (born March 5, 1951 in Rome ) is an Italian architect , architectural theorist , architectural historian and professor emeritus for the history of urban development at the ETH Zurich .

Academic education

Lampugnani attended the Swiss School in Rome from 1957 to 1960, and then, from 1960 to 1970, the German School in Rome. From 1970 to 1973 he studied architecture at the La Sapienza University in Rome and the University of Stuttgart . In 1973 he received his diploma and in 1977 he did his doctorate in Stuttgart. In 1983 he obtained the Dottore in Architettura at the University of Rome.

Research and science

Between 1974 and 1980 Lampugnani was a research assistant at the Institute for Fundamentals of Modern Architecture and Design at the University of Stuttgart under Jürgen Joedicke . 1981–82 followed a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service in the Berlin artist exchange program , 1981–83 a research fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies at Columbia University in New York. 1983 Lampugnani was professor at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts Salzburg , 1984–85 professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1986 a one-year fellowship at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin followed . As successor to Heinrich Klotz, he headed the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt / Main from 1990 to 1995. From 1990 to 1994 he was a university professor at the State University of Fine Arts (Städelschule) in Frankfurt am Main. From 1994 to 2016 he was full professor for the history of urban development at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , 1998–2001 also head of the department of architecture, 2001–03 deputy head, since 2003 also a member of the institute for urban development, 2005–07 head of the network City and landscape. From 2002–07 he was director of the graduate school “Urban Forms: Conditions and Consequences”, and from 2007–2010 head of the working group “Spatial Sciences in the ETH Domain”. Since 2008 he has been deputy head of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) since 2010 . In addition, he gave numerous lectures and held visiting professorships, including at Harvard University, at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona and at the architecture faculty of the Politecnico di Milano.

Lampugnani was one of the protagonists of the Berlin architectural dispute , which was sparked by the models of the rebuilding of Berlin's inner city after reunification. He propagates a formally disciplined, local contextual and aesthetically sustainable architecture without modernist or postmodernist extravagances. As the author and editor of several highly regarded works on architectural history and theory and the author of numerous essays, his pointed view is widely received.

Work as an architect

In 1980 Lampugnani opened an architecture office in Berlin, further offices followed in Milan (Studio di Architettura) and Zurich (Baukontor Architects).

These and other architectural works have been published in various monographs and in the most important international architecture magazines, including Casabella, Domus and Lotus international, Milan, Arquitectura Viva, Madrid, and AMC (Architecture Mouvement Continuité), Paris. Lampugnani was a member of various juries for architecture competitions and architecture prizes, including the Praemium Imperiale, Tokyo (consultant), the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture, Barcelona (chair) and the Green Prize for Urban Planning from Harvard University.

Exhibitions

In 1984 Lampugnani directed the exhibition “The Adventure of Ideas. Architecture and Philosophy since the Industrial Revolution ”in the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin (1985 under the title“ L'avventura delle idee nell'architettura 1750–1980 ”in the Palazzo della Triennale in Milan). In 1987 the exhibition “Le città immaginate: un viaggio in Italia” followed, also in the Palazzo della Triennale (with Vittorio Savi). From 1990–95 he was director of the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt am Main , where numerous exhibitions, symposia and lecture series took place under his direction. He also curated the exhibition “Rinascimento. Since Brunelleschi a Michelangelo: La rappresentazione dell'architettura “, which was published in 1994 in the Palazzo Grassi in Venice (with Henry A. Millon ), 1995–96 in the National Gallery of Art , Washington DC, in the Musée des Monuments historiques, Paris, and in Old Museum , Berlin was on display. Various of his architectural works have been repeatedly exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions at the Venice Biennale.

Advice and editorships

From 1980 to 1984 Lampugnani was a scientific advisor to the International Building Exhibition in Berlin (The New Buildings). 1981-85 followed the membership of the editorial committee of "Casabella" in Milan. Between 1986 and 1990 he was the deputy editor, and from 1990 to 1996 he was solely responsible for the editor of “Domus”. 2000-2005 he was a member of the editorial board of "The Harvard Design Magazine". In 2010 he was an urban planning and architecture consultant for the reconstruction of L'Aquila.

Memberships and honors

In 1987 Lampugnani was awarded the Comité International des Critiques d'Architecture . He has been a member of the Association of German Architects since 1991 and of the Association of Swiss Architects since 1995 . 1992–96 he was a member of the architectural advisory board of Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt am Main, and 1999–2002 a member of the scientific advisory boards of the Triennale di Milano and the Musée d'Architecture Français, Paris. This was followed by membership of the scientific advisory board of the Collegium Helveticum , Zurich, and the Swiss Science and Technology Council, Bern , from 2000–2004 . 2001–2014 Lampugnani was a member of the Steering Committee for all Novartis campus facilities, and from 2012–2014 he was a member of the Munich Airport design advisory board. Since 2001 he has been a member of the International Building Academy Berlin and the program advisory board of the Oskar von Miller Forum, Munich. In 2006 he received the honorary award from the Association of Freelance Architects in Germany for his book “The Modernity of the Permanent”. Since 2009 he has also been a member of the advisory board for the Villa Garbald im Bergel think tank. In 2006 he received the honorary award from the Association of Freelance Architects in Germany. V., Munich, in 2009, 2011 and 2017 the Golden Owl for special merits in teaching, in 2010 the Bruno Zevi Book Award of the International Committee of Architectural Critics, the Credit Suisse Award for the best lecturer in the entire ETH (2017) and the Heinrich -Tessenow Medal (2017).
