Vladimír Zoubek

Vladimír Zoubek (born September 21, 1903 in Heřmanův Městec (then: Hermannstädtel), † May 24, 1995 in Prague ) was a Czech geologist .

Life

Zoubek studied at the Charles University in Prague and received his doctorate in 1927 . He stayed at the Charles University as an assistant to the Geological Institute.

In 1931 Zoubek became a research assistant at the State Geological Institute in Prague and worked there until 1962. In 1936 he published a pioneering study of the geology of the Western Carpathians . In it he identified the tectonic unit Veporikum with rocks of the Upper Palaeozoic and Mesozoic Era . In 1948 he joined the KPČ . In 1953 he became a corresponding member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences . 1954–1956 he was director of the institute.

Zoubek founded the Geological Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the 1950s, in which he then worked. In 1962 he became a real member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. 1969–1974 he led the institute. In 1977 he was elected a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR .

In 1979 Zoubek became a senior scientist at the new Institute for Geology and Geotechnics . He led the creation of the geological map of Czechoslovakia and was involved in the tectonic map of Europe . He carried out the geological surveys for the construction of the Vltava cascade .

Zoubek was Vice President of the International Union of Geological Sciences .

The mineral Zoubekit was named after Zoubek .
