The Vohwinkeler Senke is a natural spatial unit with the order number 337 1 .38 in the urban area of the Bergisch city of Wuppertal (district Vohwinkel ) within the Wuppertaler Senke . The narrow tectonic depression consists of heavily folded, karstified mass limestone from the Central Devon , which has been eroded and karstified by heavy precipitation, and forms the western continuation of the Wuppertal limestone region.

The subsoil in the eastern part consists of Miocene sands and clays in which allochthonous deposits of lignite are embedded, which were also exploited in mines and pits ( Zeche Sonntagskind , Zeche Vohwinkel ). The western part consists of loess soils .

The limestone area rises from the lower areas to the north and south on plateaus consisting of greywacke and slate . In the natural area there is the watershed between the river systems of the Wupper and the Düssel . Karst springs can be found towards the Wupper . In the east, the Vohwinkler Senke merges into the Sonnborn limestone area .

The depression is covered with residential buildings and commercial areas from the Wuppertal district of Vohwinkel. They cross numerous traffic routes, including the federal highway 46 , the federal highway 224 and the federal highway 228 , as well as the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld railway line .
