The limestone area rises from the lower surfaces on the Wupperknie near Hammerstein (height at 130 m), which consist of gravel deposits , to the north in stages to high limestone plateaus that reach up to 200 m in height. These limestone plateaus are divided into individual plateaus by side valleys and dry valleys . Further north and south, steep slopes rise to high ridges and plateaus, which consist of greywacke and slate . In the east, the Nützenberger Querriegel delimits the Sonnborn limestone area from the Elberfeld limestone basin . In the west the limestone area merges into the Vohwinkel depression .

In the limestone area there are numerous sinkholes , which are filled with Middle Miocene sands . The limestone area is covered with residential buildings and commercial areas in the Sonnborn district of Wuppertal. Numerous traffic routes, including the federal freeway 46 with the Sonnborner Kreuz , the federal freeway 535 , the federal road 7 , the federal road 228 , the state road 418 and the state road 74 , as well as the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line cross it.
