Vojtěch Cepl (born February 16, 1938 in Prague ; † November 21, 2009 there ) was a Czech lawyer and university professor. From 1993 to 2003 he was a judge at the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic . He was one of the authors of the current constitution of the Czech Republic .

Life

Cepl graduated from the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Prague in 1961, then first became a candidate in science (CSc.) And received his doctorate in law ( JUDr. ) In 1966 . From 1965 he worked as a university professor at his faculty without being a member of a party. Initially, he was an assistant at the Chair of State Theory and State Law.

From 1967 to 1970 Cepl studied as a postgraduate theoretical sociology of law at the University of Oxford (Great Britain) and at the University of Michigan Law School (USA). From 1971 he was a specialist assistant at the chair for civil law. He completed his habilitation in 1989.

After the Velvet Revolution , he became Vice Dean for Foreign Relations in 1990 and became Head of the Department of Civil Law, and in 1993 he was also a professor there. In addition, he was a member of several legislative commissions for the creation of numerous laws, the civil code and the constitution. During this time he became a member of the Democratic Citizens Alliance (ODA), but had to give up his membership as a constitutional judge.

Between 1990 and 1993 he was visiting professor at British, Canadian and US law schools. In 1993 he was visiting professor at the University of San Francisco and the University of Chicago . In 1996 he was appointed a Distinguished visiting professor at Georgetown University in Washington DC.

On July 15, 1993 he was appointed judge of the Czech Constitutional Court. After the end of the judge's office, he was again a lecturer at the Prague Faculty of Law.

He also gained fame through the series "Člověk a demokracie" (People and Democracy) on the Czech radio station Český rozhlas 6.
