Vojtěch Jasný (born November 30, 1925 in Kelč , Czechoslovakia ; † November 15, 2019 in Přerov , Czech Republic ) was a Czechoslovak or Czech director and screenwriter .

Life

Vojtěch Jasný studied philosophy and Russian literature at the Charles University in Prague and from 1946 to 1951 he studied camera and directing at the film faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague . From 1951 to 1956 he worked in the army film studio. From 1956 to 1970 he was a writer and director of the Barrandov film studio and television. In 1970 Jasny emigrated from Czechoslovakia for political reasons, first went via Yugoslavia to Austria, where he was granted Austrian citizenship, and then lived and taught in New York . At the Burgtheater in Vienna he worked temporarily as a theater director. In 1989 he returned to Prague during the Velvet Revolution .

In the 1970s, Jasný became known in Germany through literary adaptations of two books by Heinrich Böll ( Not only at Christmas time and Views of a Clown ) as well as through television productions for ZDF and Bavarian Radio .

For the film All Good Compatriots , in which he portrays the forced collectivization of agriculture in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War, Jasný was awarded the director's prize at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival .

Jasný died in November 2019, two weeks before his 94th birthday.
