action

After the aging French banker François Perret-Latour handed over his business into the hands of a capable successor, there are always moments in his life when he feels lonely and unfulfilled. Although he has been married three times and has children, he is mostly alone. One day he receives a call from his first wife, who lives in America, that their son has committed suicide. The first thing he does is ensure that his deceased son's family receives financial support. Then Perret-Latour, disturbed by this news, lets his chauffeur take him out into nature, where he pauses in amazement by a hazelnut bush and breaks a twig, which then finds a place on his bedside table. He had told his housekeeper, Madame Juliette Daven, that he hadn't seen a hazelnut bush in ages and that it would awaken memories of his childhood in him.

In the middle of the night he is informed that his sixteen-year-old granddaughter Nathalie is visiting, who turns to him for help because she is pregnant. After Perret-Latour has tested how serious the young woman is about wanting to keep the child, he assures her of his help. He learns from his lawyer Paul Terran that there is Article 336 in French law, according to which it is possible that only the father's name appears on the birth certificate, i.e. the mother's name is not mentioned. Perret-Latour wants to pass himself off as a father and take care of the child in order to keep all chances for her future open for his granddaughter. Nathalie agrees, but asks him whether he will give the child back if she wants it with her one day, as he promises her.

In the evening there is a family dinner, attended by Perret-Latour's second wife Jeanne, the son of the two Jacques, Nathalie's father, and his new girlfriend Hilda. After the banker has explained his plan to them, they also agree.

When the child is born, Perret-Latour reports it to the registry office and pretends to be the father. The little boy is supposed to be called Yves Jacques François Perret-Latour. After a few irritations, however, the notarisation cannot be refused, and so the baby moves into the large Paris apartment on Place Vendôme , located directly above the bank . Perret-Latour puts a few hazelnuts under his mattress in the cradle with a smile.

criticism

TV Spielfilm pointed with the thumbs up, gave one of three points for humor and claim, two for tension and was of the opinion that Rühmann would once again impress as a character actor in one of his last roles. Great! The conclusion was:

"Old Rühmann gives everything again!"
