The Nürnberger Volksfest is a folk festival that takes place twice a year as the Nuremberg Spring Festival and the Nuremberg Autumn Festival at Dutzendteich in Nuremberg .

history

The first fair in Nuremberg took place in autumn 1826 in honor of the Bavarian King Ludwig I. instead. It was organized on the Peterheide in Gleißhammer . In addition to a large pageant and various games such as sack and egg running, fireworks were already part of the program for the first edition . On the Peterheide, which was renamed Ludwigsfeld in 1833, the folk festival took place annually from that year until 1842.

In 1853 a folk festival was held again on Ludwigsfeld. When King Maximilian II visited Nuremberg in 1855 , the festival took place for the first time on the grounds of today's city park , which was renamed from Judenbühl to Maxfeld on this occasion. There was no folk festival for sixteen years before the tradition was resumed in 1872. Coupled with the Sedan Day , this first took place on the Maxfeld , from 1885 on the Plärrer and from 1887 again on the Ludwigsfeld. In 1898 the first film screening took place in Nuremberg as part of the folk festival. The attractions also included performances by the choral societies or gymnasts , balloon rides and parachute jumps .

The festival was canceled during the First World War . From 1919 it was carried out on the Deutschherrnwiese on the Pegnitz . This year, the folk festival took place for the first time not only in autumn, but also in spring with a second edition. In 1925, the folk festival was moved to Fürther Strasse on an area where the Quelle mail-order company later built its premises. In 1940 and 1941 the folk festival took place again on the Deutschherrnwiese before it was stopped due to the war.

The festival was resumed immediately after the end of the Second World War . It took place again from 1947 to 1952 on the premises on Fürther Straße before it was carried out for the first time in 1953 on what is now the event site on Dutzendteich.
