Location of Volkwardingen in Lower Saxony

Volkwardingen ( Low German / Plattdüütsch Volgern ) is a district of the municipality of Bispingen in the Lüneburg Heath in the Heidekreis district in Lower Saxony .

history

The area has been settled since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by numerous barrows on the Lohberg . Another burial ground to the east of the village dates from the Iron Age .

The first documentary mention comes from 1193 in connection with the sale of the village (from the Bispingen parish) to Bishop Lüder von Verden . However, at that time Rudolf I was Bishop of Verden . The place name goes back to a settling Saxon from the tribe of the Longobards named Volkquard; the final syllable "-ingen" also indicates the Lombards.

A historic staircase store from 1600, which was expanded by an annex in 1702, still exists today and is one of the oldest in the region.

In the course of the construction of the (today's) federal motorway 7 , the barrows from the Bronze and Iron Ages were scientifically examined in 1939, as they were on the planned route.

On March 1, 1974, Volkwardingen was incorporated into the municipality of Behringen; this lost its independence on March 16, 1976 and was affiliated with Bispingen.
