The Volta street is a street in the district of Gesundbrunnen the district center of Berlin .

The street has been named after the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745–1827), who was a professor in Padua and who invented the first galvanic elements ( voltaic column ) and the electroscope since 1896 . The street runs between Brunnenstrasse and Hussitenstrasse ; the Wattstraße and Jasmunder road lead to the Volta street.

The so-called test tunnel runs under Voltastraße in the area between Jasmunder Straße and Hussitenstraße, and from 1895 an underground electric train ran there between two parts of the AEG's operations . This test tunnel is considered the first subway in Berlin.

AEG company erected various factory buildings from 1895 to 1941, which are enclosed by Voltastraße, Brunnenstraße, Hussitenstraße and Gustav-Meyer-Allee. The older halls were built in the typical Wilhelminian style. They were later rebuilt and new buildings were added to the ensemble. In the 1940s, the facilities were expanded again. The entire site is now a listed building. The Gewerbesiedlungs-Gesellschaft (GSG) bought the building in 1984 and extensively renovated it. In 1983 the innovation and start-up center (BIG) was opened in the old AEG walls , and in 1985 the technology and innovation park Berlin (TIB). Deutsche Welle-TV's production rooms are located on the site - previously RIAS-TV and ALEX Offener Kanal Berlin .

The Voltastraße underground station of the U8 is located under Brunnenstraße . It was built in 1914/1915 by the AEG Schnellbahn AG, but was not put into operation until 1930 by the BVG .
