Vranov (Mnichov)

Vranov ( German Frohnau ) is a west Bohemian village and part of the municipality Mnichov in Okres Domažlice in the Czech Republic .

geography

Vranov is located on the northeast slope of the 877 meter high Starý Herštejn about 3 kilometers southwest of Mnichov. In addition to the road in the north-east to Mnichov, there is a road along the eastern slope of the Český les heading south-east to Klenčí pod Čerchovem and a road heading south-west, which leads up in narrow, steep bends to the Vranovské Sedlo (German: Frohnauer Pass) and behind the Pass steeply down into the valley from Nemanice to Höll in Bavaria . This road is only passable from late spring to autumn. As soon as the first frosts set in, the water flowing down from the slopes of the surrounding mountains forms a thick, mirror-smooth ice surface that does not thaw until late in spring and makes driving on the road impossible and life-threatening.

history

Vranov was founded in 1130 by the monk Georgi Frohnhauser from the Pivoň monastery, hence the German name Frohnau. In another opinion, Vranov means the village of a Vran. This interpretation assumes that Vranov already existed as a Czech settlement and later, when Germans immigrated there, the name was onomatopoeic via Fronao or Franowa to Frohnau. Elsewhere, the year of foundation or the first written mention of Frohnau (Vranov) is given as 1430.

Vranov was parish and schooled in Pivoň . In the tax roll of 1656, eight years after the end of the Thirty Years' War , the following are listed for Frohnau: 5 farmers, a gardener, two burned-down cattle and cattle: 12 teams, 10 cows, 19 young cattle, 6 sheep and 17 pigs. In 1789 there were 16 houses in the village, in 1839 17 houses and 146 inhabitants.

In 1913 there were 30 houses, 208 residents, a board saw, a shop, a weaver, two inns and a tobacco shop in Vranov.

After the Munich Agreement , Frohnau was added to the German Reich and until 1945 belonged to the Bischofteinitz district .
