Vrba ( Cyrillic : Врба) is a village in Serbia , whose name means pasture in German . Vrba is 170 km south of Belgrade , 9 km east of the city of Kraljevo and around 120 km west of Niš .

Geography and population

The village is located in the Opština Kraljevo in Okrug Raška in western central Serbia at 178 meters above sea level. Vrba had 1360 inhabitants at the 2011 census, compared to 1286 inhabitants in 2002. According to the last three population statistics, the population of the village rises and falls and rises.

96% of the population of Vrba are Serbian Orthodox Serbs and a minority of 20, also Orthodox Montenegrins , who make up 1.5% of the population. In addition, one Ukrainian and one Slovene live in the village, each representing 0.7%. 20 residents stated an unknown ancestry that corresponds to 1.5% of the population of Vrba. The village consists of 412 households.

Nearby is the Zapadna Morava River . There are also two sources of streams in the village. Vrba is one of the villages with one of the youngest populations in all of Serbia. Since the Kosovo war in 1999, Serbian refugees from Kosovo have made up the majority of the population. They had built houses in Vrba before the war and moved into them at the beginning of the conflict in Kosovo.

The capital of Montenegro , Podgorica, is around 300 km south of Vrba.

Infrastructure

Vrba is one of the most progressive villages in the Kraljevo region . In addition to its own post office, Vrba has one of the best-equipped village clinics in Opština Kraljevo , mainly because the municipality makes this available. The village has its own water supply.

Vrba also has one of the best equipped elementary schools in Serbia , the " Dositej Obradović " elementary school . The school was built with funds from the citizens of Vrba.

There are several clubs in the village, for example some sports clubs. Vrba also has a disco, several cafes and a small park with a memorial to the Yugoslav partisans .

In the village of Vrba there are two Serbian Orthodox churches, an old wooden church dedicated to the transfer of the relics of St. Nicholas and a newer stone church dedicated to St. Sava of Serbia .

The wooden church is considered a high cultural monument of Okrug Raška and all of Serbia. The church was built in the popular style in the 1830s. Since 1982, services have only been held in it for the church festival of the transfer of the relics of St. Nicholas.

The churches belong to the Žiča Eparchy , the Serbian Orthodox Church based in Kraljevo .

history

Vrba is a very old village. According to the legend, the place got its name thanks to a pasture where several boats were tied together that swam in the Morava . When the river withdrew, the village of Vrba was founded on the site. Today Vrba is close to the bank of the Morava, which separates Vrba from neighboring Vitanovac .
