Vyacheslav Ivanovich Starschinow ( Russian Вячеслав Иванович Старшинов ; born May 6, 1940 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player (center) and coach.

Career

Vyacheslav Starschinow began his career in 1957 at Spartak Moscow . Here he was the dominant striker in the following decades with 405 goals in 540 games. He and his team won the Soviet championship three times . In 1972 he ended his playing career and was head coach at Spartak, before he returned to the ice for the 1974/75 season. In 1975 he left the USSR to spend three seasons in the Japanese league with Ōji Seishi Ice Hockey Bu . As a player-coach, he led his team to two championships. 1978/79 he spent his last season at Spartak Moscow.

Internationally he played at ten ice hockey world championships for the Sbornaja and won nine gold medals with them (1963 to 1971); at the World Cup in 1965 he was also named the best striker. He also took part in the Olympic Games twice and won the gold medal both times ( 1964 and 1968 ). In 182 international appearances, he scored a total of 149 goals.

In 2004 he was honored with the induction into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame and in 2007 with the induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame .
