Watching lion
The Watching Lion is a life-size sculpture (art) that was cast in both iron and bronze and is relatively common in public places (including parks and cemeteries).
Depending on the source, this lion sculpture is attributed to Theodor Kalide or Christian Daniel Rauch . Since Kalide acted on Rauch's instructions when he made the model in his sculptor's studio according to his own design, both artist names are inextricably linked with this work.
The counterpart to the Waking Lion is the “ Sleeping Lion ”, which Kalide modeled in the same workshop. Both are considered pioneering works and groundbreaking for modern animal sculpture. They were very popular for a long time, so iron and bronze castings were still made of them in the 20th century. Initially the foundry was the Royal Prussian Iron Foundries in Berlin.
