There were 587 candidates for the 88 seats in 24 provinces. The main parties were the National Democratic Party (109 candidates) and the banned Islamist Muslim Brotherhood (whose 19 candidates ran as independents - President Husni Mubarak failed in an attempt to disqualify 17 of them). The turnout was 23 percent. Of the 16 seats determined in the second round, the NDP received 14 and Independents two. The result was a total of 84 seats for the NDP, three for independents and one for the Tajammu.
