  • Parliamentary elections were held in Egypt in three stages between October 18 and November 8, 2000 .

    According to a decision of the Supreme Constitutional Court in July 2000, the elections were divided into three stages, as the judges had to wiretap all voting stations. The first stage on October 18 for 150 seats was held in Lower Egypt , the second was on October 28 for 134 seats in Eastern and Upper Egypt , and the third stage on November 8 included the 156 seats in Central Egypt and the capital, Cairo . Two seats in Alexandria remained vacant after the results were annulled by a court.

    The top candidate of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) was Ahmad Nazif , the top candidate of the largest opposition party, the New Wafd Party , was Numan Gumaa .

    Results

    The result was a victory for the National Democratic Party, which won 353 seats. After this election, 35 of the 72 independents joined the NDP.

    Seventeen of the independent candidates were members of the Muslim Brotherhood .
