Parliamentary elections in Egypt 1987
Early parliamentary elections were held in Egypt on April 6, 1987 , with a second round for nine seats on April 13.
The elections followed changes in the electoral law adopted by the constitutional referendum in February 1987 , which now allowed independent candidates to run for election. The result was a victory for the ruling National Democratic Party , which won a total of 346 of the 458 seats. after this election, the people's assembly appointed the incumbent Hosni Mubarak for the post of president, whose candidacy was also proposed to the voters in a referendum on October 5th.
The turnout was 50.45%, and an estimated turnout of 25% was expected before the elections. The opposition leader for the first time was the Islamic Alliance , a coalition of the Socialist Labor Party , the Socialist Liberal Party and the Muslim Brotherhood .
