The fire in Leotala

In early October 2019 , a forest fire broke out in East Timor , which has been described as the largest in the country in living memory. Who were affected by the fire Sucos Leotala , Açumanu (both in the Office of Administration Liquiçá , community Liquiçá ) Lisapat and Urahou (Office of Administration Hatulia , Ermera ).

The fire burned an area of 1500 hectares. 90 percent of this forest area contained coffee plantations, which represent the economic basis for the inhabitants of the region. New plantings take years to bear fruit again. 487 houses and some Uma Lulik (holy houses) , which are used to store traditional relics, also burned down. 294 families are affected. People weren't hurt. The economic damage is estimated at nine million US dollars.

The fire was probably caused by out of control slash and burn . Strong winds fanned it and it spread quickly in the country where the dry season is drawing to a close. The mountainous terrain made the extinguishing work difficult. The fire brigade and local residents fought the flames together, including workers from the Fazenda Algarve , the coffee plantation owned by the Carrascalão family . Occasionally it burned in some places until the end of the first week of October.

Fires broke out in nine of East Timor's 13 parishes during October. A total of 664 houses were destroyed between October 2nd and October 21st. Including a chapel on the Tatamailau and a school. The damage was put at an amount of 22 million US dollars.
