Waldemar Christian (born June 26, 1622 at Frederiksborg Palace ; † February 26, 1656 in Lublin ) was a Danish count of Schleswig and Holstein . He was the son of the Danish King Christian IV (1577-1648) and his morganatic wife Kirsten Munk (1598-1658).

Life

Waldemar Christian inherited the island of Tåsinge near Funen from his parents . Between 1639 and 1644, King Christian IV had the Kærstrup (or Kærsgård) farm there expanded into Valdemars Slot ( German  Waldemars Castle ), which he never moved into. In 1637 Waldemar Christian traveled with Hannibal Sehested to Brussels , France , Italy and England .

He was repeatedly sent to Sweden on a diplomatic mission by his father . For political reasons, Waldemar Christian Irina (1627–1679), a daughter of the Russian Tsar Michael I , was supposed to marry. Shortly after the New Year 1644, Waldemar Christian arrived in Moscow . He was received with great pomp. However, Waldemar Christian refused, as requested by the Tsar, to convert to the Russian Orthodox Church . The wedding did not take place. Waldemar Christian was imprisoned in Russia for a year and a half. He was only able to return to Denmark after Michael's death in July 1645.

In the following years Waldemar Christian broke up with his mother because of financial disputes. He first joined Emperor Ferdinand III in Poland . to, then in 1655 to the Swedish King Karl X. Gustav . He took part in the Swedish-Polish war in the Swedish service , where he died in Lublin in 1656 at the age of 33.
