Waldemar Jerzy Ossowski (born June 8, 1970 in Danzig , Poland ) is a Polish archaeologist , university professor and museum director . Since November 2015 he has been director of the municipal museums ( Muzeum Gdańska ) in his hometown.

career

Ossowski grew up in Danzig. From 1989 to 1994 he studied archeology at the University of Toruń . In 2000 he became a PhD , in 2012 there habilitation . In 2000 he became a qualified curator there .

After graduating in 1994, Ossowski became an employee of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk, where two years later he became the deputy head of the Department of Underwater Archeology . In 2000 he became a curator there. On November 16, 2015 Ossowski took over the management of the city museums of Gdansk. In addition to his work at the museums, he was visiting professor for archeology at the University of Warsaw in 2011/2012 . In 2013 he was appointed assistant professor at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology at the University of Gdansk and in 2015 he was appointed adjunct professor .

From 1995 to 2014 Ossowski took part in numerous investigations into shipwrecks in the Gdańsk Bay and on the Polish Baltic coast . These included iron and copper ships from the 16th to 17th centuries. Century, the General Carleton (1785) in front of the Piaśnica estuary , around the German tug Arngast at the Stilo lighthouse and a Dutch wreck from 1791 in the Gdańsk Bay. During emergency excavations , which the Maritime Office in Gdynia had commissioned for hydrological work on the Dead Vistula , a 23 meter long "Burdyna" from the 18th century was lifted and two other wrecks examined.

Ossowski has been a member of the Polish branch of the Explorers Club since 2013 .

Honors

In 2010 Ossowski was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland . He received the silver badge for monument protection in 2000.

In the annual competition of Polish museologists, his publications and research work have repeatedly been awarded the Sybilla .
