Waldemar Rösler was born on April 21, 1882 as the son of a photographer in Striesen near Dresden . The family moved to Königsberg early . From 1896 to 1904 he attended the Königsberg Art Academy , where he also met his future wife in 1902. His teachers were Max Schmidt , Emil Neide and Ludwig Dettmann , whose master class he became.

In 1905 he had his first exhibition at the Berlin Secession . This was followed by a longer stay at Gut Schildeck , between Osterode and Hohenstein , the birthplace of his bride Oda Hardt , whom he finally married in 1906. The couple settled in Groß-Lichterfelde near Berlin. In 1907 Oda gave birth to twins Louise and Fritz (fallen in 1943).

Max Liebermann became aware of him at the 15th exhibition of the Berlin Secession in 1908 . Max Beckmann and Theo von Brockhusen became his friends. The following year he became a member of the Secession. In 1911, following the resignation of Max Liebermann, he was elected to the board of the Berlin Secession at the suggestion of Beckmann.

After the mobilization in 1914, he was drafted into the Landwehr and deployed on the Western Front in Belgium , and in 1915 promoted to lieutenant for bravery at the front. For a while he was stationed at the occupation administration in Brussels. There he met Gottfried Benn .

Because of his poor physical and mental condition, he was transferred to the Arys military training area in East Prussia in 1916 . There he committed suicide on December 14, 1916. He was buried near the grave of the Hardt family at Gut Schildeck.

Waldemar Rösler was a member of the German Association of Artists . His work was considered "degenerate" during the Nazi era .

The Ahrenshoop Art Museum dedicated an extensive exhibition to Rösler in 2016/2017 under the title "Waldemar Rösler (1882-1916). A Secessionist by the Sea".
