particularities

Quarry lake

The Waldenecksee or Petersee is a quarry lake on the western edge of the Northern Black Forest . It is located in an exclave of the municipality of Sinzheim between Iberg and Fremersberg on the west side of Mount Waldeneck, surrounded by Baden-Baden's urban area . A quarry was set up there around 1900 and was in operation until 1968. A lake about 200 m long and 35–75 m wide then formed in the bottom of the quarry. It bears one of its common names after the former quarry tenant , the porphyry gravel works Peter . Today it is leased as a fishing water, bathing is prohibited.

ecology

Since there is no water exchange in the lake fed by spring and surface water and nutrients are brought in by vegetation and bathers, there is a risk of tipping over . In the summer of 2013, this could only be prevented with a fire brigade, who enriched the lake water by spraying it with oxygen.

Solar powered circulation pump

As a result, the leaseholder of the lake, the Sinzheim fishing club, had a solar-powered circulating pump installed in 2014 with financial support from the municipality of Sinzheim, which pumps water from the lake bed to the surface.

geology

On the rock walls of the quarry, quartz porphyries of the Upper Rotliegend are exposed . They are ignimbritic rhyolites , i.e. pyroclastic volcanic rocks, which did not flow out as lava and cooled down, but arose from fluid suspensions of small magma particles in highly heated gases. Three ignimbrite cover fusions of different color and mineral composition can be seen from bottom to top. Lithostratigraphically, the rocks belong to the Lichtental Formation , which is made up of the remains of a nearly 300 million year old volcano. The State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining Baden-Württemberg classifies the abandoned Waldeneck quarry as a geotope worthy of protection .

The site as a filming location

The quarry and lake area, located about two kilometers from the Baden-Baden broadcasting house of the Südwestrundfunk , has repeatedly served as a film location, around 1984 in the four-part historical film Lenz or die Freiheit , where it depicted Höllental , in several episodes of the crime series Tatort and in 2010 as Location of the showdown in the thriller Among Neighbors . The Baden-Baden director Eric Dean Hordes also used the lake as a filming location in 2015 and realized mystical scenes with a lake demon for his movie Goblin - That's Real Troll .
