The Waldsee Lauer (sometimes also Wolfsee ) is an artificially created body of water in the north-west of Markkleeberg in Saxony . The name refers to the former nearby Gut Lauer , which was lost due to the open-cast lignite mining .

Location and shape

The Waldsee Lauer is located northeast of the Cospudener See in the Cospuden Landscape Park. It is about 460 meters long, between 130 and 320 meters wide with a bulge to the northwest and has a maximum depth of 5 meters. The Lauer forest lake is 109.4  m high and has a volume of around 0.3 million m³. Its area is 8.5  hectares , its circumference 1.6 kilometers.

In the south it is connected to the Cospudener See by an approximately 900 meter long canal. In the canal near the Cospudener See there is a lock to compensate for the height of the Cospudener See, which is 90 cm higher. In the north there is an artificial connection to the raft ditch (also called Batschke ).

The forest lake Lauer is surrounded on all sides by trees, its banks are covered with a narrow reed belt .

history

The Waldsee Lauer emerged from a gravel pit that had been created to extract building materials for the relocation of trunk road 2 (today Bundesstrasse 2 ), which had become necessary due to the lignite opencast mining in the 1970s . After the work was completed, a bathing facility was created.

From 1980 to 1986 the then Waldbad Lauer was a publicly operated swimming lake with changing rooms and lounges for the supervisory staff. Due to the necessary drainage of the approaching Cospuden opencast mine , the water table and the water level in the bathing lake fell.

With the cessation of open-cast mining at the beginning of the 1990s, the recultivation and flooding of the Cospudener See, the water level rose again. The Waldsee Lauer, as the lake was now called, got a navigable connection to the Cospudener See and the Floßgraben, for which a bridge was built on Brückenstraße for the latter.

use

Since the opening of the Cospudener See for swimming and many water sports in 2000, nature has been able to develop almost undisturbed at the Waldsee Lauer.

The lake is popular for fishing. According to the Saxony Fishing Atlas, the most important fish species are perch , pike , carp , tench and whitefish .

The water hike course 1 for muscle-powered and special motor boats from the Leipzig city harbor on Elstermühlgraben in the city center to the Cospudener See leads through the Waldsee Lauer. According to the count at the Cospuden lock, 7,000 to 10,000 boats pass through the Waldsee Lauer annually.
