from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valentin Christow (born March 15, 1956 in Pernik ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter . He was the winner of the silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and world champion in 1975 and 1977 in the 2nd heavyweight division (up to 110 kg body weight).

Career

Valentin Christow was discovered for weightlifting as a 12-year-old student as part of a large talent scouting program initiated by the Bulgarian coach of the national weightlifting team, Ivan Abajiev . After intensive basic training, Valentin Christow already achieved achievements at the age of 17, with which he advanced to the top of the world. At this age he already managed to push 200 kg. After finishing his career as an active weightlifter, he temporarily held a leading position in the Bulgarian Weightlifting Association. He is an honorary citizen of Pernik .

Valentin Christow made his first start at an international championship at the European championship in Verona in the 2nd heavyweight division. He managed there 387.5 kg in a duel, but had to admit defeat to the Soviet weightlifter Ljubomir Ustyuschin , who reached 390 kg in a duel.

In 1975 he won his first major title. He was first in Marseille junior world champion in the 2nd heavyweight with 405 kg in a duel (175 kg tearing and 230 kg pushing) and then won the world and European championships in Moscow the world title in the same weight class with 417.5 kg (180 kg / 237.5 kg) in superior style in front of the Soviet weightlifter Vasily Moscheikow , who came to 390 kg in a duel.

After winning the European Championship in 1976 in Berlin (East) with 415 kg in a duel before Yuri Saizew from the USSR, who reached 400 kg in a duel, Valentin Christow drove to the Olympic Games in Montreal as a high favorite . There he lived up to this favorite role and became Olympic champion with 400 kg in a duel ahead of Yuri Saizew, who reached 385 kg in a duel. Immediately after the competition he was exposed as a doping offender and had to surrender his gold medal .

After only one year of suspension, he was able to start again at the 1977 World and European Championships in Stuttgart . He won there in the 2nd heavyweight with 405 kg in a duel before Yuri Saizew with 395 kg. In 1978 Valentin Christow took a break. In 1979 and 1980 he appeared again at the international championships, but only reached second places. So he came at the European Championships in 1979 in Saloniki in the 2nd heavyweight to 402.5 kg and had to admit defeat Sergei Arakelow from the Soviet Union, who reached 410 kg in a duel. At the European Championships in Belgrade in 1980 he lost to Leanid Taranenka from the USSR, who won a duel with 420 kg, and Leonid Taranenka was well ahead of him at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow with 422.5 kg. Valentin Christow managed 405 kg in a duel in Moscow.

After the 1980 Olympic Games, Valentin Christow resigned from weightlifting. The ten world records that Valentin Christow set in his career were canceled in the 1990s when increased doping controls led to a general decline in weightlifting performance. The international weightlifting association made a new weight classification at that time.
