Valentin Ivanovich Yezhov

Valentin Iwanowitsch Jeschow (born January 21, 1921 in Samara , † May 8, 2004 in Moscow ) was a Soviet screenwriter who, together with Grigory Naumowitsch Tschuchrai, was nominated for the Oscar for the best original screenplay in 1961 for The Soldier's Ballad . In addition, he won the Mexican Premio Ariel in 1988 .

Life

After attending school, Jeschow was drafted into the Red Army in 1940 and did his military service there until 1945 during the Second World War . After the end of the war he studied side by side in the scriptwriting department of the State All-Union Institute for Cinematography and at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. In 1951 he became a member of the CPSU .

1954 wrote Yezhov with Vasily Ivanovich Solovyov his first screenplay for a film, and indeed for the of Vladimir Ivanovich Gonschukow staged sports movie The World Champion (Чемпион мира).

He had his greatest success with the script for Die Ballade vom Soldier (Баллада о солдате, 1959) with Vladimir Sergeyevich Ivashov , Shanna Prokhorenko and Antonina Mikhailovna Maximowa in the leading roles , written together with Grigory Tschuchrai . For this, he and Tschuchrai, who also directed, were nominated for the Oscar for the best original screenplay at the 1961 Academy Awards. At the same time, both were awarded the Lenin Prize in 1961.

In 1989, Yezhov, who became a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1976 , won the Mexican film prize Premio Ariel together with Sergio Olhovich for the best screenplay for the historical drama Esperanza (1988) directed by Olhovich with Dmitri Vadimowitsch Charatjan , Grigori Alexandrowitsch Ostrin and Ernest Ivanovich Romanov .

By 1993, Jeschow wrote scripts for over thirty films as well as some stage works such as Night of the Nightingale (Соловьиная ночь), Aljoscha (Алеша) or Shot behind the Dunes (Выстрел за барханами) and novels . He worked with well-known directors such as Boris Wassiljewitsch Barnet , Mark Semjonowitsch Donskoi , Andrzej Wajda and Andrei Sergejewitsch Michalkow-Konschalowski . In 1997 he was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland .
