The White Sun of the Desert is a 1969 film directed by Vladimir Motyl . The film premiered on March 30, 1970 in Moscow . The work produced by Mosfilm belongs to the genre of Soviet western films and is considered a classic of Soviet cinema. This film enjoys cult status to this day.

The plot of the film takes place on the east coast of the Caspian Sea , in Turkestan , where the Red Army soldier Sukhov took part in the Russian Civil War . After the war is over, Suchow decides to return to his hometown Samara . But on the way home Suchow is given another task: he has to look after nine freed harem ladies . In a small coastal town he holed up with the women in the local museum and awaited the attack of their former owner, the bandit Abdullah. The shabby Tsarist customs officer Wereschtschagin and the silent nomad Said support Sukhov in the showdown against his gang of many.

Since a Russian space crew watched and successfully launched the film after the Soyuz 11 accident , the film has become a must for all cosmonauts who watch the film before taking off into space. Originally, the film served cosmonauts as an example of camera technology for their own films in space, but it became a lucky charm.
