Architecture and building history

Instead of an old cemetery chapel (from around 1500), the new church was built in the years 1743–1760 by Johann Christoph Kosch from Kaaden (Kadaň) in rococo style. The church of St. John of Nepomuk in the New Town of Prague . The church was consecrated on July 4, 1750 by Vicar Wenzel Kirchner from Deutsch Kralup (Kralupy u Chomutova).

The main altar and the two side altars were decorated with painted mock architecture by Andreas Friedrich from Komotau (Chomutov) in 1823 . On the side altars are the statues of St. Barbara and St. Vincent (supplemented by statues of angels) and a picture of St. Ottilie . The sculptures from around 1760 were made by the sculptor Karl Waitzmann from Kaaden. The church has two side chapels and two sacristies and is decorated with the remarkable ceiling fresco “Mystery of the Rosary ”. The frescoes show the miracles of the Virgin Mary and the Birth of Mary and were created in the years 1752–1760 by the painter Josef Hager (1726–1781) from Preßnitz (Přísečnice).

The frescoes in the choir depict the four evangelists and the church fathers in illusionistic pseudo-architecture . The church was renovated in 1825 and 1967.

The towers were not completed until 1831 according to plans by Karl Siech. On the cemetery wall facing the street there is an octagonal rococo chapel with semicircular niches, corner pilasters and a lantern , built in 1764/65 by JC Kosch, which originally served as a mortuary .

Marian devotion

The veneration of Mary in this church is shown in the Gothic wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from 1480–1490 in a glass case above the main altar and a small statue of Mary from 1765 (miraculous image). The Gothic wooden statue comes from the Augustinian monastery in Prague . The devotion to Mary began when it was set up in the Holy Trinity Church in Klösterle from 1652 and then in the Nikolauskirche in Niklasdorf (Mikulovice) near Klösterle, before it was transferred to the cemetery church in 1683. This is where the pilgrimage tradition began , which continues to the present day.
