Walter Bishop junior ( April 10, 1927January 24, 1998 ) was an American jazz pianist of bebop and hardbop .

Walter Bishop Jr. was the son of composer Walter Bishop Sr. During his time in high school, he was friends with musicians such as Kenny Drew , Sonny Rollins, and Art Taylor . Bishop began his professional career after World War II; so he played in 1949 in the Four Brothers band with Stan Getz , Zoot Sims , Allen Eager and Brew Moore . In October 1951 he took part in Miles Davis ' Dig session ; he also accompanied the trumpeter during his session in January 1953, when he was recording with Charlie Parker for the last time (Collectors' Items ). He had played with Parker in 1952 at the Rockland Palace concert . In 1953 he also played in Oscar Pettiford's sextet; he also worked with Art Blakey , Tubby Hayes , Charlie Parker, Oscar Pettiford, Kai Winding , Jackie McLean , Curtis Fuller , Terry Gibbs , Sonny Stitt , Clark Terry , Blue Mitchell and later with the formation Supersax .

In the early 1960s, he also directed his own trio with Jimmy Garrison and GT Hogan . He performed until the 1990s.

After studying at the Juilliard School at Hall Overton in the late 1960s, he taught music theory at colleges in Los Angeles in the 1970s . From 1983 he taught at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford . He also wrote the textbook A Study in Fourths on jazz improvisation .
