Athletic career

Until 1954 Eglmeyer played in the company sports club (BSG) Motor Neustadt / Orla , after which he moved to the second-rate GDR league club BSG Motor Nordhausen-West . From 1956 Eglmeyer was part of the squad of SC Motor Jena, which also played in the GDR league. There he was used as a striker from the start of the season, and he played 24 of the 26 played point games. With these games and his four goals scored, he contributed to the rise of the Jena in the GDR league. As a second division player in 1956, he was a member of the GDR youth team, for which he played four international matches until 1957 and was once successful as a goalscorer.

Also in his first league season Eglmeyer was part of the player base, but had no regular position, because coach Hans Warg used the 22-year-old in his 24 league appearances in various attack positions as well as in midfield. After Eglmeyer had only completed three league games in 1958, he returned to the regular team in 1959, where he was regularly used in the storm in 21 league games under the new coach Georg Buschner . In the 1960 season, Eglmeyer was an all-round player. In his 24 league appearances he played as a striker, runner and defender. During this season, SC Motor Jena won their first title, in the final of the GDR soccer cup they defeated SC Empor Rostock 3-2 after extra time. Eglmeyer, who had previously played all the cup games of the season, was in the team as a stopper in the final . In the subsequent competition for the European Cup Winners' Cup , SC Motor surprisingly made it to the semi-finals. Eglmeyer was also in all eight games in this competition, including the two semi-finals against Atlético Madrid (0: 1, 0: 4).

The league season 1961/62 was played over 39 rounds due to the change of the schedule to the summer-spring rhythm. Eglmeyer was injured in the first league game and only returned to the starting line-up as a midfielder on matchday 14. In 1962/63 SC Motor Jena won its first football championship. Eglmeyer was a bench in Jena midfield until matchday 10, then another injury put him out of action until the end of the season. On the last day of the season, when the Jena team had already secured the championship, Eglmeyer gave his farewell performance in the league at the match between SC Lok Leipzig and SC Motor (3: 2). In the summer of 1963 he played three more games in the IFC competition , in the game Zagłębie Sosnowiec - SC Motor (2-0), the 28-year-old finally said goodbye as a top division player of SC Motor Jena.

It was his 164th competitive game for Jena, in which he scored 24th goals. In the Oberliga Eglmeyer had been used 112 times and scored 15 goals. From 1963 to 1974 he was the team leader of the Jena league team.
