Walter Freiherr von Czoernig-Czernhausen (born February 16, 1883 in Trieste , † December 28, 1945 in Großgmain near Salzburg ) was an Austrian cave explorer and senior civil engineer with the Austrian Federal Railways . He is the grandson of Karl von Czoernig-Czernhausen .

Life

The family did not stay in Trieste long after his birth, but followed his father to the respective place of employment, first to Klagenfurt, then to Innsbruck , where the father died in 1893. Walter Czoernig graduated from the Innsbruck Realschule and then attended the Imperial and Royal Naval Academy in Rijeka . In 1903 he moved to Graz where he graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1907. He then entered the service of the Imperial and Royal State Railways , from 1908 to 1912 in Vienna-Floridsdorf and Mährisch Ostrau, from 1913 in Salzburg. Until his retirement in 1934, Bischofshofen and Salzburg were his places of work. After his retirement he devoted himself exclusively to caving.

As a young engineer, he already went on extensive tours with his comrades. When he arrived in Salzburg, he immediately joined the Salzburg cave exploration, where he used his skills as a technician for caving. One focus of the cave research was the work in the Eisriesenwelt , which he got to know in 1913 on the third expedition of the "Landesverein für Höhlenkunde in Salzburg". When the research continued in 1919, he was part of the new research and carried out the plan. After the cave was expanded, Walter Czoernig became "Eisriesenwelt - partner" and acted as cave guide.

Between 1920 and 1940 there was hardly any major new research in Salzburg that Walter Czoernig was not involved in. Around 400 cave plans are said to have been recorded, but they have not yet been recorded in any documentation. In numerous articles, most of which appeared in newspapers and magazines (including the Speleological Yearbook, the communications of the Main Association of German Speleologists, the communications for Salzburg regional studies and Alpine Association inscriptions) he reported on successful cave trips. He currently has over 200 writings recorded.

Czoernig not only worked in the Salzburg caves, he also made cave trips and plans in Lower Austria, Styria, Carinthia and abroad. In 1938 he was invited to England, among other places. Through his work, he was known in the professional world not only as a Salzburg specialist, but also as an Austrian capacity.
