Walter Gaudnek

Walter Gaudnek (* 1931 in Fleyh , Czechoslovakia ) is a modern artist and art professor at the University of Central Florida in Orlando . Gaudnek has been one of the main representatives of Pop Art since the 1970s . He was the only Pop Art artist to also take up religious themes (e.g. Stations of the Cross in St. Michael in Schweinfurt ).

life and work

As a result of the expulsion , Gaudnek lost his Sudeten German homeland in 1946 . In 1947 he attended the secondary school in Schrobenhausen , from 1948 to 1951 the then upper secondary school in Ingolstadt (today Christoph-Scheiner-Gymnasium ). In 1951 he attended the Blocher School for Free and Applied Arts in Munich . After a year he switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1953 he founded the Neue Galerie in Ingolstadt and others in Munich together with H. E. Gabriel . From 1957 to 1959 he studied at the University of California . In 1968 Gaudnek received his doctorate from New York University on the subject of "The symbolic meaning of the cross in contemporary American painting". The preoccupation with religious topics pervades his work. Since 1970 he has been a professor of painting, graphic design, art history and art history at the University of Central Florida . In 1998 he was appointed a full member of the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts , class of arts and art studies. In 2011 Gaudnek was awarded the Altomünster market medal.

The Gaudnek Europa Museum (GEM) in Altomünster has existed since 1999. Gaudnek exhibits around 400 of his paintings and sculptures on three floors. The museum shows a collection of paintings, drawings , watercolors , collages , assemblages , objects , sculptures , prints , the "theater out of the suitcase", an archive with photos and documents from the years 1949–2005. In 2013 the exhibition "Witches and Saints" was opened.

Many Pop Art works by Gaudnek can also be seen in the gallery in the stairwell of the Altomünster elementary and middle school .
