Walter George (politician)

Walter George (* 1929 in Gudensberg ; † December 28, 1996 in Dana , Iowa , USA) was a German-born American Republican politician , judge , political scientist , German studies specialist , humanities scholar and university professor .

Life

Walter George studied political science at the universities of Mainz , Heidelberg and Marburg (Lahn) . He came to the United States for the first time as an exchange student in 1954. He completed his studies with a master's degree in political science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln . In 1955 he married in the USA. From 1955 to 1957 George was a teacher at Luther College in Wahoo , Nebraska. From 1957 to 1960 George taught political science at the University of Heidelberg . 1960 moved back to the USA and taught political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as German at St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh .

In 1966 he moved to Blair , Nebraska . He taught German, political science and humanities at Dana College there . From 1970 he also worked as a judge at the court in Blair. From 1974 to 1978 he was a member of the Nebraska Parliament . During this time he was appointed chairman of the town planning committee. In 1978 George was re-elected. In 1980 he moved to Germany . He became director of the European Office of the Great Plains Regional Commission in Frankfurt am Main . In 1987 he returned to the United States of America and was Saarland representative in Atlanta until 1988 .

He died in Dana at the age of 67.

George was married and had two children.
