Walter Hoppe (born July 25, 1896 in Beedeln (near Rochlitz ), † February 26, 1976 in Jena ) was a German geologist and university professor who dealt particularly with the geology of Thuringia .

Life and work

Walter Hoppe was born in 1896 as the son of the landowner Julius Hugo Hoppe and his wife Lina Hulda. Thalmann was born in Beedeln in Saxony . In 1916 he passed the Abitur at the secondary school in Chemnitz . He then volunteered for the military and was deployed on the Western Front, where he was unfit for duty after being seriously injured.

From 1917 to 1921 he studied natural sciences with a major in geology at the Universities of Göttingen and Leipzig .

In 1921 he received his doctorate with a palaeontological thesis on "Jura and Chalk of the Sinai Peninsula" with Franz Kossmat in Leipzig. He was then from 1921 to 1924 assistant at the Institute for Geology and Technical Geology of the TH Darmstadt under Alexander Steuer , and then from April 1, 1924 to March 31, 1926 as an assistant at the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Leipzig under Friedrich Rinne .

In 1924 he received his habilitation with the petrographic topic "Investigations on contact metamorphic sediments of the Odenwald".

On April 1, 1926, he began his work as a regional geologist in the State Geological Service of Thuringia and joined the Thuringian State Geological Survey in Jena, which was founded in 1925 . He started a family in Jena. During the Second World War he was employed as a so-called military geologist , mainly in Norway.

From 1946 he continued to work at the newly founded Jena branch of the "German State Geological Institute in the Soviet Occupation Zone" and its successor institution, and in the fall of 1951 he was also appointed lecturer for applied geology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . There he was awarded the title of professor in 1953.

On August 1, 1954, Walter Hoppe was appointed to the newly established chair for geology at the University of Architecture and Building (HAB) in Weimar. The Institute for Geology and Technical Geology was founded there on January 1, 1957, and he was subsequently appointed director.

On September 1, 1962, Walter Hoppe retired, but continued to give lectures. In 1962 he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR III. Class, and he was admitted to the GDR Academy of Sciences in 1964 . He lived in Jena until his death and died there on February 16, 1976.

Research priorities

During his time in Thuringia, the main focus of Walter Hoppe's research was in the field of hydrology and the exploration of potash deposits on the Werra and in the southern Harz. He also dealt with red sandstone stratigraphy and technical rock science.
