Walter Kaaden (born September 1, 1919 in Pobershau ; † March 2, 1996 in Thum ) was a German engineer . Kaaden perfected resonance charging in two-stroke engines .

After attending elementary school, Kaaden went to Auto-Union in Zschopau and did an apprenticeship as a locksmith there from April 4, 1934 to April 3, 1937 . In addition to his training at Auto-Union, he attended the Zschopau municipal trade school from Easter 1934 to Easter 1937. Immediately after his apprenticeship, he worked as a locksmith at Auto-Union in Zschopau from April 1, 1937 to September 30, 1938. From October 4, 1938 to July 29, 1940 he studied at the State Higher Mechanical Engineering School in Chemnitz in the department for mechanical engineers. Kaaden graduated with a certificate of July 29, 1940.

During the Second World War Kaaden u. a. helped develop the Henschel Hs 293 and the Messerschmitt Me 262 . After the war, Kaaden started his own wood business . In 1949, he rose with a DKW RT 100 in the off-road racing one. In 1952 Kaaden took part in street races with a self-made motorcycle. This aroused the interest of Alfred Liebers , the then director of the IFA plant in Zschopau. Liebers hired Kaaden to build a motorcycle racing department.

Function of a two-stroke engine with diaphragm inlet control and resonance exhaust

Starting with a two-stroke engine with an intake rotary valve , Walter Kaaden began systematically with research to improve the performance of this type of engine. Kaaden found out that the use of resonance waves of the exhaust tract leads to a significant increase in performance and developed the resonance exhaust .

In 1958 reached Horst Fügner second place in the 250 cc class of the Motorcycle World Championship , 1959 was Gary Hocking in the 250s and in 1961 Ernst Degner in each 125cc World Championship runner. Kaaden stayed in the racing department of MZ until it closed in 1975 and then moved to the off-road sports department, where he worked until 1985. He remained a member of the FIM even afterwards .

For his services, Walter Kaaden was awarded the People's Merit Technician in 1958 and the Patriotic Order of Merit in 1965. He was also made an honorary member of the ADMV Presidium .
