Walter Koch (born April 14, 1955 in Straubing ) is a German banker, historian and company archivist. In his dissertation and in further research he dealt with Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen .

Life

Walter Koch studied sociology , German and history at the universities of Augsburg and Würzburg . During his studies he worked during the semester break at Raiffeisenbank Fürstenfeldbruck and later at Raiffeisenbank Schwandorf-Nittenau . At the time, his career goal was to become a teacher .

After graduation, he had planned a dissertation on Gottfried Benn and Arnold Gehlen . His doctoral supervisor Lothar Bossle showed him 31 letters from Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen in 1980 and suggested that he write about them, which Koch then agreed. While working on his doctorate, since the career opportunities for teachers were rather poor at the time, he began training as a banker at Raiffeisenbank Schwandorf. The disputation of his paper “The cooperative idea of FW Raiffeisen as a model of cooperation in modern industrial society” did not take place until 1991 due to the simultaneous occupation. He was thus awarded a doctorate in philosophy.

Already during this time he had, mostly in his own publishing house "Verlag Walter Koch", later "Verlag Dr. Walter Koch ”, source editions and publications on Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, his family and the cooperative system. There are also publications in several anthologies.

From 2000 he worked as a company archivist at Volksbank Raiffeisenbank Dachau . After the material had increased significantly through two mergers with other banks, he got an assistant from 2004. In 2005 the bank's board of directors suggested setting up a bank museum in the former vault that was intended for the archive. Walter Koch and his assistant were entrusted with the conception and implementation of this idea from 2007 to 2009. After renovation work, he set up the museum in 2007. The first cooperative bank museum was then opened in spring 2009. In 2014 the symposium “Cooperatives in the Region” was organized by the Historical Association of Bavarian Cooperatives in Dachau, where Koch presented the museum and gave a lecture.

Walter Koch is referred to as one of the German-speaking experts on Raiffeisen, whom one can hardly ignore when dealing with it, and is also recognized as a researcher abroad. On May 7, 2012, Koch was the interviewed expert on the topic of "Friedrich W. Raiffeisen" from radio knowledge in Bavarian Broadcasting.
