Walter Nimtz

Walter Nimtz (born April 14, 1913 in Züllchow , Randow district , † June 24, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German historian . He was director of the Museum for German History in Berlin.

Life

Nimtz, the son of a working class family, was part of the working class youth movement at an early stage. After 1933 he took an active part in the resistance fight against the Nazi regime . Before 1945 he worked as an employee in Stettin , after 1945 as a functionary for the SED in Saxony-Anhalt . As head of the SED district party school in Halle (Saale) he was delegated to study at the party college "Karl Marx" in October 1947 , where, after completing his studies in 1948, he taught as a lecturer and head of the chair for the history of the German labor movement until 1963. In 1959 Nimtz received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the party college and was appointed professor there in 1960.

From 1963 to 1966 Nimtz was director of the Museum of German History in Berlin, after which he was appointed deputy director of the Central Institute for History at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . From 1972 to 1977 he was also Vice President of the Historians' Society of the GDR .
