Walter Siegert (politician)

Walter Siegert (born May 18, 1929 in Siegmar near Chemnitz ; † February 2, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SED ). From 1980 to 1990 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and in 1990 temporarily acting Minister of Finance of the GDR .

Life

Siegert attended business school from 1941 and graduated from high school in 1947 . From 1947 to 1949 he was assistant to an auditor's office in Chemnitz and from 1949 to 1952 auditor in various companies and economic bodies. Siegert joined the SED and studied between 1952 and 1955 at the University of Finance and the University of Economics in Berlin . He completed his studies with a degree in economics. He then worked there as a research assistant until 1960 and was promoted to Dr. oec. PhD. From 1961 he was an employee in the Ministry of Finance of the GDR. Until 1966 he worked in the office of the government commission for the revaluation of basic resources in the national economy. This was a measure in preparation for the new economic system of planning and management of the national economy (NÖS). From 1966 to 1968 he was department head in the financial and economic research institute. From 1968 to 1972 he acted as deputy head and from 1974 to 1980 as head of the State Financial Audit Department of the GDR. From 1980 to 1989 he was State Secretary in the Stoph government in the Ministry of Finance (successor to Werner Schmieder ).

Siegert retained the position of State Secretary in the subsequent Modrow and de Maizière governments . On January 29, 1990, after Uta Nickel was recalled, he was appointed Managing Minister of Finance of the GDR. In the spring of 1990 he had worked in the Modrow government on economic reform. In April / May 1990, Siegert, who had since left the SED, was, along with Günther Krause and Alwin Ziel, a member of the GDR expert commission for the preparation of monetary, economic and social union . In June 1990 he was involved in the founding of the Deutsche Versicherungs-AG, which emerged from the State Insurance of the GDR and was then taken over by Allianz .

Siegert died after a serious illness on February 2, 2020 at the age of 90.
