biography

The Councilor son had immediately after the end of the First World War , the Academy of Music and Performing Arts visited his hometown of Vienna and then, at the age of 20 years, in Aachen taken up his first engagement. Varndal initially continued to play in the provinces, then stayed again in Vienna in the mid-1920s, where the film director Robert Wiene brought the actor, who has been active in the film industry since 1924, in front of the camera for a few small roles in three of his productions of the Pan-Film .

Then Varndal went to Berlin to play theater there (on the Saltenburg stages ). Back at home in Vienna at the beginning of the 1930s, Varndal, who outside of Austria also allowed himself an image-promoting 'von' as an addition to his name, found commitments and the like. a. at the Neues Wiener Schauspielhaus and, especially during the Second World War , at the cabaret ' Wiener Werkel ', which he co-founded . His early post-war engagements took him to Vienna's stage ' Die Insel ' and to the theater in der Josefstadt .

At the same time, in the 1950s, after almost 25 years of abstinence from the screen, Varndal received an abundance of cinema offers. These were mostly small to very small appearances in Heimatfilms and noble schnulz such as “ I dance with you into heaven ” and “ Romance in Venice ”. In this medium, the inconspicuous artist served batches such as teachers and secretaries, professors and assistants, tailors, landlords and hairdressers. In the late years of his life (from the mid-1960s) he found, again as a small actor, also sporadic employment in television (e.g. in ' Radetzkymarsch ', ' Der Feldherrnhügel ', ' Sorbas ' and in the series' Wenn der Vater mit dem Sohne ') and went on a theater tour with piece contracts (e.g. to Stuttgart ).

His stage career includes such diverse pieces as ' The chaste bon vivant ', ' The lifelong child ', ' Paths of chance ', ' Anatevka ' and ' Hokuspokus ', in which he was able to prove both his comedic and singing talents.

Varndal spent his twilight years in an artists' retirement home in Baden near Vienna, where he also died. His final resting place is at the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna Gr. 7 No. 17
