action

On the way to his new office, Pastor Linhart saves the life of the drunken Franz Santner. In the village itself, Franz is unpopular, in the family he is considered a black sheep, and his popular brother Georg has almost given up on making his brother a good member of the community. Franz wants to go. In Angela, the new maid at Georg's farm, he finds a kindred lonely soul with whom he spends a night. The next day he takes his rifle and leaves the village. Forester Huber, who suspects he is a poacher , shoots him. During the subsequent exchange of fire, Huber was fatally hit by Franz. Franz is arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Nine months later, Angela gives birth to a boy. After she swore Pastor Linhart that he would look after the child, she died in childbed . Linhart resolves to turn the boy baptized Andreas into a priest .

Shortly after the birth, rumors had spread in the village that Linhart was Andreas's father - Angela hadn't wanted to call Linhart the boy's father. Even 22 years later, the gossip in the village has not stopped. Andreas has now become a godly young man who is now coming back to the village after years in the seminary. Here he meets Hanni, the niece of Linhart's cook Brigitte, and falls in love with her. This throws him into a crisis of faith, especially since Brigitte and Georg do not see Andreas as a future priest, but rather consider him a good farmer. Georg therefore wants to transfer his estate to Andreas, which enrages the distant relatives of the choir director Moser. They suspect that Linhart had his hands in the game to give his "son" a farm. At the same time, they see Georg's decision as evidence of Linhart's paternity. Once again they write a letter of complaint to the bishop . They are also planning a boycott of the next church service and want to disturb it with cat music .

Franz, released early from prison, returns to the village. He reveals himself to Linhart when he learns that Angela is no longer alive and has left a son. Shortly before the angry crowd can storm the service, Franz opposes them and announces his fatherhood of Andreas. Meanwhile, the summoned bishop talks with Linhart. Since Andreas has abandoned his vocation , the bishop gives his consent to Hanni and Andreas marrying, allowing him to take off clerical clothing. Just as Linhart asks for his transfer, since the congregation will never stand behind him, the song No beautiful land can be heard outside his window , which the congregation brings to him as one. With the opening of Franz, the opinion of the residents about Linhart has suddenly improved. And since Andreas is now the legal heir to George, he can also take over his estate without objection.
