Walter von Cube (born July 10, 1906 in Stuttgart , † June 11, 1984 in Quinten am Walensee , Switzerland ) was a German journalist . Cube was editor of the magazine Der Ruf and editor-in-chief and chief commentator at Bayerischer Rundfunk .

Life

Walter von Cube came from the German-Baltic noble family von Cube . His father was the well-known naturalist, doctor and mountaineer Felix Alexander von Cube (1876–1964). He grew up in Stuttgart and Munich. After graduating from high school in 1924, Cube began his journalistic training at the Berliner Tageblatt under Theodor Wolff and Alfred Kerr . From 1929 he was married to Gerta Clason. He stopped his journalistic activities after the Nazi takeover of power in 1933.

In the following years, von Cube worked in agriculture, among other things. During the Second World War he was taken prisoner of war in southern France. There he met Joseph Rovan and received a teaching position at the College for German Prisoners of War in Paris. After his return, Walter von Cube wrote for the Neue Zeitung in Munich in 1947 and began working as a freelance commentator for Radio Munich . In 1948 he emerged as editor of the magazine Der Ruf . From March 1, 1948, he took over as editor-in-chief of the politics and economics department at Radio Munich (from January 1949 Bayerischer Rundfunk ), and at the same time became chief commentator. Especially in the 1950s, his comments on the division of Germany or on domestic political issues attracted nationwide attention and were the subject of controversial political debates. In a radio commentary, for example, he spoke out against the unlimited admission of refugees from the GDR , as only a few were really politically persecuted. This led to strong protests and prompted Günter Neumann in his cabaret show Die Insulaner on September 21, 1950 to post an open letter to Mr. von Cube .

In 1956, after the death of Rudolf von Scholtz, he held the office of acting director. A year later he became program coordinator for radio and television in Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR ). In 1960 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of artistic director. In the same year he was appointed radio program director and deputy director. In 1972 he left the BR after the conflict over the amendment of the Bavarian Broadcasting Act and went into retirement.

Von Cube received several awards for his work, including the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1965 .
