Walther Petri

Walther Petri (born April 11, 1940 in Leipzig , † September 27, 2011 in Berlin ) was a German freelance artist. He worked as a painter , graphic artist , sculptor , author and poet .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1958, Petri began studying applied arts in Leipzig that same year. From 1961 to 1963 he worked as a theater painter at the Stralsund Theater and completed an assistant stage design there .

In 1963 he began studying pedagogy in Dresden , which he completed in 1967. He then worked for almost ten years as a teacher of German and art education in Espenhain near Leipzig. From 1976 to 1980 he worked at the University of Education in Leipzig.

Petri has been working as a freelancer since 1980. In addition to his lyrical work, the work included children's books, adaptations (especially English and Czech poetry), editions, radio reports , documentary film texts as well as graphics and book designs. His works were u. a. Translated into Polish , Hungarian , Lithuanian , Flemish , French and Russian . The first major exhibition was shown in 1990 in Mülheim an der Ruhr . In 2011 Petri died during an operation in Berlin.

Walther Petri was divorced, had three grown children and last lived in Berlin. His grave is in the Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof in Berlin.

Awards

Walther Petri received a number of awards, including the Silver Palm of GDR television , the Alex Wedding Prize in 1990, the Eberhard Literature Prize donated by the State of Brandenburg in 1992 and the Otto Braun Prize of Honor from the German Schiller Foundation in 1996 . In 1997 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
