The Wanderer W21 is a car of the middle class of the brand Wanderer 1.7-liter six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive . The Auto Union presented him in 1933 as a smaller version of the Wanderer W 22 with 2-liter engine in front. Both were developed as Porsche Type 7 in Ferdinand Porsche's design office in Stuttgart. The W 21 was on the market as a four-door sedan and a two-door convertible (two windows). The limousines were manufactured in the Auto Union plant in Siegmar near Chemnitz, which also built the chassis, which glasses in Dresden provided with the convertible body.
The W 21 has the same engine as its predecessor W 17 (7/35 hp) , but an improved low-frame chassis with a rigid front axle and torsion bar suspension on the same wheelbase ; At the rear a "swing axle" ( pendulum axle ) with transverse spring is installed, which Porsche had designed based on its designs at Steyr . Instead of the mechanical cable brake of the W 17, a hydraulically operated "oil pressure brake" from ATE (license Lockheed ) was used.
The overhead in - line engine with side camshaft ( spur gear drive ) developed by Porsche in 1931 has a displacement of 1.7 liters and an output of 35 hp. The rear wheels are driven via an unsynchronized four-speed gearbox with a shift lever in the middle of the car.
In 1935 the name of the same car was Wanderer W 235 . Instead of the convertible, a 4-door touring car was now offered.
The otherwise structurally identical successor Wanderer W 35 with front independent wheel suspension (double wishbone with transverse spring) was only available in 1936 before it was replaced by the Wanderer W 24 with a rear " floating axle " and a newly designed 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine with vertical valves ( page-controlled) was replaced.
Together with the 2-liter W 22, W 240 and W 40 and the 2.3-liter W 245, W 250, W 45 and W 50 , 29,111 units were produced.
