Wappinger is a city in Dutchess County in the US state of New York . The name Wappinger is derived from the Indian tribe of the Wappani, who lived in this area before the white settlers. In 2010 the town had 27,048 inhabitants.

history

The city was first settled around 1659. As an administrative unit, it was formed from the Town of Fishkill . In 1900 the Town of Wappinger had 4,389 inhabitants.

The place was founded as part of an area acquired by Francis Rombout.

Wappinger is located in the southern part of Dutchess County and covers an area of ​​74.0  km² , of which 70.6 km² are land and 3.4 km² (= 4.62%) are bodies of water. In the northern part of the urban area there is a campus of the Ditches Community College. About 2/3 of the Village Wappingers Falls belong to the urban area of ​​Wappingers, the rest belongs to the Town of Poughkeepsie , which connects to the north. To the south is Fishkill.

The central lifeline is US Highway 9 , on which most of the area's industry has settled. The western city limit is formed in part by the Hudson River and borders Orange Counties and Ulster Counties .

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Wappinger inhabited 26,274 people. The population density was 372.0 people per km ². There were 10,144 housing units at an average of 143.6 per km ². The Hoquiam population was 86.18% White , 4.96% Black or African American , 0.24% Native American , 4.29% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 2.44% said other races belong to and 1.88% named two or more races. 7.87% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Wappingers distributed to 9793 households out of which 34.3% were living in children under 18 years of age. 58.1% of households were married, 9.4% had a female head of the household without a husband and 28.6% were not families. 23.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 6.2% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.

The urban population was divided into 25.4% minors, 7.6% 18–24 year olds, 32.5% 25–44 year olds, 24.1% 45–64 year olds and 10.4% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 women there were 98.8 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 96.2 men.

The median household income in Wappinger was 58,079 US dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 66,273 US dollars.
