War Rock (워록) (often spelled Warrock or WarRock ) is a computer game from the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS), which offers several game modes. It is a free-to-play game and therefore available as a free download.

War Rock is developed by the South Korean company Dream Execution and is based on their Jindo engine. It is distributed by various publishers in several countries and regions (currently in Korea, Japan, Europe / America and the Philippines). In Indonesia, War Rock was distributed by PT Megaxus Infotech from November 2009 to October 2013. However, sales in Indonesia and Taiwan were discontinued. War Rock is distributed in Europe / America by K2 Network and in Korea by Nexon . However, since May 2012 the game has been distributed by Nexon Europe in the Europe / America region . In Korea the distribution of the game was taken over by Dream Execution . Now the game has been operated by PapayaPlay since August 2017.

The game deals with a conflict in the fictional state of Derbaran between the ruling dictatorship and the rebel army NIU (National Independence Union) .

Goals of the game

The aim of this fighting game is to achieve as many experience points as possible in order to rise to higher military ranks, such as corporal, sergeant, first lieutenant, etc. At the end of each round or when moving up one level, the player also receives virtual money (dinars). The virtual currency can be exchanged for weapons of any kind, but these are only available in the inventory for a limited time. The players act on the side of two fictional troops, named Derberan and NIU, and can handle various vehicles, planes or boats as well as a rich arsenal of weapons. While both opposing troops have the same tasks in Deathmatch, in MissionMode the yellow Derberan bombers and the green NIU bomb defusers .

Military branches

In War Rock there are five player classes to choose from (Engineer, Medic, Sniper, Assault and Heavy Trooper). As standard, the soldiers are equipped with four different items:

  • with fists ("knuckles")
  • a pistol ( Colt )
  • a main weapon (MP5 for Engineer and Medic, K2 for Assault, M24 for Sniper and the Panzerfaust for Heavy Trooper)
  • a fourth item, which depends on the chosen player class: the Medic has medicine, the Assault and Sniper have grenades, the Engineer has the wrench and the Heavy Trooper has mines for vehicles.

Additional weapons, some of which are exclusive, can be purchased in the item shop for the 5th & 6th slot. Here too, with a few exceptions, the offers are only available for a limited period of time. There is currently only one type of premium, the Gold Premium. Under Gamersfirst there was still the silver and bronze premium, although from 2011 the bronze premium could only be purchased through Playspan. Gold Premium gives the player some advantages, such as more EXP (experience points), access to all weapons in the shop (in the game), and the choice of premium maps.

The 8th slot can only be occupied by commercially purchased items. Under Gamersfirst there were so-called retail boxes in which the permanent weapons for the 8th slot were contained. Under Nexon, this is no longer available in this form, only individual weapons that have no time limits. Under Nexon, these are mostly available in crates (capsules in which you can win something valuable with luck, but never make a loss).

Mechanic (Engineer)

Mechanics are equipped with a wrench that enables all vehicles to be repaired. In addition, the mechanic can own ammo boxes that equip the teammate, or even the enemy, with ammunition. You can also upgrade it with so-called land mines. If an opponent runs over it, this life is withdrawn and he no longer has stamina (endurance). Furthermore, it has Claymore Mines , which can be activated over a distance of up to 30 meters and kill the enemy immediately if they are placed correctly. These landmines provide the mechanic with valuable "assists". His standard weapon is the MP5 . Free weapons to equip him with are the Uzi , the K1, the G36C and G36CD, as well as the P90 . As premium weapons, he has the MP7A1, the TMP9 , the Dual Scorpions , the MAC10, the AKS-74-U, the CX4-Storm and the Winchester to choose from. Mechanics are a good choice, especially on battle group maps, as you can use them to repair your vehicle.

Paramedic (Medic)

The Paramedic is the only female character in War Rock. She can heal herself or other players on her own side (increase in life points) using a medic kit or medic boxes. The healing of fellow players gives so-called assists , these are also available for blinding opponents with anti-glare mines, for example. In the end, these assists give more experience points, which you have to collect for higher levels. Weapons are, for example, from level 1 the Uzi , from level 6 the K1 , from level 11 the FN P90 and from level 21 the MP7 A1. Furthermore, you can buy the TMP9 , the MAC10, the AKS-74-U, the CX4-Storm and the Dual Scorpions with so-called Nexon Cash . For beginners, the Medic Class is the easiest class to use, as there is no risk of bleeding and all weapons (with the exception of the MP7A1) have very little recoil.

Sniper

The sniper is more suitable for the battlefield, as you can safely eliminate the enemy from a long distance. He has a hand weapon for close combat. Even the snipers can be equipped with better weapons like the SSG or AUG . The PSG , the AiAw and the M82 Barret can be purchased as premium weapons . It takes a lot of practice to be good with the sniper, because you have to find a good position and be able to factor the sinking of the bullets and enemy movements into the calculation of the shot.

Assault unit

The Assault is equipped with the K2 as standard . As the game progresses, you can buy the character better and more familiar weapons. The AK-47 , the G36 C, the M4A1 , the TAR-21 and the G36CD are available free of charge. As premium weapons you can buy the L85A1 , M16A4 , G36, M60 , Galil, AKS-47U and the M249 . Assaults are suitable for beginners on CQC, but require practice if you want to play in cities or on large battlefields, as you have to pay attention to opposing paths at the beginning. The recoil of the weapons is overcome relatively quickly both in Assault and in all other classes, and you can control it very well in a very short time.

Anti-tank (Heavy Trooper)

The anti-tank unit is equipped with a typical armor-piercing main weapon and mines, but also has a handgun for close combat. The armor-piercing weapon has very little ammunition. It can be upgraded with an RPG-7 and a Stinger . Premium users can still buy the M134 , MK1S and HK69 , provided they have the fifth weapon slot. Heavy troopers are only useful on large battlefields without premium weapons, with a good selection of weapons you can be successful in any game mode with a little practice.

Test phase

The first of a total of five beta tests took place publicly from December 9, 2005 to February 28, 2006. The fifth and final beta test ran from December 19, 2006 to January 31, 2007. The final version of the game was available for download on February 8, 2007 .

Game modes

War Rock offers different modes . After a game has been completed, players receive experience points with which they can increase their level and receive a comparatively small amount of money. The level increase gives you more money. Players will only receive experience points and money if they do not leave the game early.

Explosive (Close Quarters Combat)

The bombing / defusing mode ("Explosive") known from Counter-Strike is mission mode in War Rock. The Derbaran must plant the bomb and the NIU must defuse it. This mode differs from the Defusion scenario in Counter-Strike only to the extent that all terrorists have the bomb (i.e. they can plant it) and all anti-terrorists can defuse them equally quickly. The maps in this mode are small compared to other modes. The maps are usually completely enclosed by buildings. In War Rock, too, mission maps have two target points ("bomb spots").

4: 4 Deathmatch (Close Quarters Combat)

In this mode, max. 4 against 4. Similar to the Deathmatch known from Urban Ops and Battle Group, each group has a certain number of "tickets" which are reduced by player deaths. You win when the generic group runs out of tickets. However, there are also some differences. On the one hand the players have no ammunition supply (only an engineer with so-called "Ammoboxes" can supply the players with ammunition), on the other hand, unlike Urban Ops and Battle Group, the maps are very small and there are no bases to take.

Free for all

In the game mode "Free for All" all players play against each other. Up to 16 players can play against each other on the CQC cards and up to 24 players on some Urban Ops cards. If one of the players reaches the point limit, this player wins. Points can be obtained by killing opponents.

Deathmatch

In the team deathmatch mode , which is possible with Urban Ops and Battle Group, the players have to collect points on the map from their (impregnable) headquarters. Points taken, which are shown as flags, then serve as re-entry points.

As usual in deathmatches, you have won when the opposing team has no more tickets . The number of tickets is also determined at War Rock before the game starts. Tickets are consumed both by player deaths and by capturing flags, with capturing flags deducting two tickets from the opposing team instead of one.

Conquest

In Conquest mode , which is only available on a special map, players must occupy a point in the middle of the map.

As usual with the Conquest, you win when the opposing team has no more tickets . The number of tickets in the Conquest game mode is set at 999 at War Rock. Tickets are used up both by player deaths and by the excess of opposing flags. For every flag captured, a certain number of points will be deducted from the opponent after 30 seconds. This game mode can only be selected by "premium players" on the server.

Capture the Flag (Battle Group)

In addition to some medium-sized maps with tanks and jeeps, which are also available in this mode without change (but with a higher number of players), there are also maps in which you can go to war with helicopters or airplanes, for example. These are the largest cards in the game.

SiegeWar 1 + 2 (Battle Group)

This mode is new. The point is that one base has to defend its base and the other has to try to conquer it. There are 3 mission objectives:

  1. Destroy one of the two gates to get to the base.
  2. Destroy a reactor in the middle of this base to get to one of the final targets.
  3. Destroy one of the three possible targets.
zombie

The zombie mode is about killing computer-controlled zombies and surviving as many waves as possible. Up to 4 players can compete together. The number and type of zombies increases with every wave that is survived. (engl .: wave)

Course of the game

The Item Shop is used by players to buy better weapons and equipment. You buy weapons for a certain number of days. With Premium you can also buy a fifth slot for weapons and other extras, so-called PX items. If the player does not play within this time, the time will still run out. Players start with a very high starting capital (100,000 dinars), which gives them the opportunity to buy a lot of weapons and equipment, which are not very good at first. You can only buy better weapons at a higher level.

After each completed match you get experience points. At 100% you go up a level and receive 2500 dinars. There are 100 levels, but it takes longer and longer to reach the next level.

Server system

Unlike other online games, War Rock only offers the option of using the publisher's server . Players can open their own game rooms on these servers. The person who creates a room is called the room master. He can configure the room, for example change the map. Before the game starts, the Room Master can kick other players out of the room. Some settings such as the mode, the player slots and a password can only be set before the game starts. However, some setting options are reserved for premium players. Players can enter the room. If all players are ready, the game will either be started automatically after 20 seconds (if previously set) or directly by the room administrator.

Events

There are regular events at War Rock. The players can play in their own event rooms. Many of these events are intended for entertainment. Examples of events:

Bubble Head Event

Players only have one weapon available, the Squeaky Hammer , a rubber mallet. The aim of the game is to knock your opponents on the head with a hammer and knock them out. The players also have huge heads, which makes it easier to hit. In addition, after defeating 100 opponents with the hammer, you could win a weapon for 15 days.

WARROCK event

For each completed game you get a letter of the word WARROCK. For CQC games there is one letter and for Urban Ops / Battle Group games there are two letters. If you have all the letters of the word WARROCK together you get one of the following weapons for one day:

  • AW50F
  • TMP9
  • L85A1
  • HK69
  • Glock

You can collect letters an infinite number of times, but you have to collect the letters within a session. If you change servers or log out, you have to start collecting again. In a modification of the WARROCK event, there are always similar, topic-related events. So there was the SIEGEWAR event for the release of the new map "SiegeWar", for the release of the new map "LostTemple" there was a Lost Temple Puzzle - event with 9 puzzle pieces that you could collect just like the letters. The same happened for the "bikini event". On the “Odyssey” map, however, players throw small and large water balloons at each other.

Big Head Event

In the Big Head Event, the players have a larger head and are therefore easier to be killed with a headshot.

Christmas / Halloween event

Depending on the event, the players have a pumpkin or snowman head. In addition, some maps have been changed. Instead of normal trees, there are suddenly Christmas trees standing around, boxes have been replaced by gifts, etc.

EXP events

There are always events in the game in which there are experience bonuses. These take place unannounced and usually last 1–3 days. Sometimes you can also buy special weapons, as happened recently. There were some knives and swords to buy in the shop.

Frost Frog Event / Snow

The aim of this event is to get 300 headshots with snowballs. Once you have achieved this, you will receive one of the following weapons:

  • TopGun (1 day)

The TopGun is a new kind of item with the help of which one receives more experience points for a kill with an airplane. The aircraft is also given a unique design.

Chariot Kill Event / Ultimate Wave Event

These events were held at the introduction of the zombie mode. The aim of the Chariot Kill Event was to kill the so-called "chariot" or "Chariot" in zombie mode. Depending on how often you did that, you got the M500 revolver for a different number of days. The Ultimate Wave Event was an event in which the aim was to create the last ("Ultimate") wave, ie to survive the zombie mode. If you managed that, you got the weapon "Flame_BIZON" for 100 days. The difference to the normal PP-19 bison is that it is stronger and has the unique flame pattern.

Community events

In addition to these official events, there are many unofficial events that are organized completely independently by players.

The first official community event with the support of GamersFirst , and the Halloween event 2009 was organized with the cooperation of Warrock-Board.de. Since the 2nd Community Event, WarrockEvent.info has been independently responsible for the events and is officially supported by GamersFirst.

During the community events, official interviews were often held with some GamersFirst employees. The owners of the individual fan communities and players were also interviewed.

The largest event is the Germany Event series, which has been taking place since 2009 and is held every week. Large, nationwide events from community to community are also held several times. The largest number of simultaneous players in this tournament was on Halloween 2009 with more than 60 players.

As already announced, the community events will continue to be supported by Nexon Europe.

Tournaments

Every four years a special tournament takes place the GNGWC (Game & Game World Championship) at this tournament the best players of the respective version will first compete against each other, the winners from this tournament then travel to Korea and compete there against the best of the other 2 versions!
