location

The river is located in Wasco County in northern Oregon. It rises in the cascade range north of the Pinhead Buttes at an altitude of about 4,000 ft (1,220 m), flows through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation essentially east to south-east and flows about 20 kilometers downstream of Warm Springs at an altitude of about 378 m in the Deschutes River .

course

The Warm Springs River is approximately 85 km in length. From its source it first flows north and turns east after a few kilometers. In the mountains, the Dry Creek and the Bunchgrass Creek flow from the north (left) . In a trough valley it flows through the Warm Springs Meadows , at the end of which the South Fork Warm Springs River flows into it from the right . He leaves the trough valley through a gorge, from which he exits again north of the Hehe Butte . US Highway 26 , known in this section as the Warm Springs Highway , crosses the river nearby .

From here the river flows through a valley that cuts deeper and deeper into the plateau. In doing so, further waters, also flowing through incised valleys, flow to it, first from the right Badger Creek and Mill Creek , then from the left the Beaver Creek . Past the former resort of Kah-Nee-Ta , the Warm Springs River flows into the Deschutes River and finally flows into it.

Drain

The Warm Springs River has a drainage basin of approximately 1,362 km². In the long-term mean (1973-2013) the average discharge at a measuring point 7.4 km above the mouth ( location ) at an altitude of 425 m (NGVD29) near Kah-Nee-Ta is 12 , 2 m³ / s. The months with the highest long-term mean (> 17 m³ / s) are February and March, those with the lowest (<7.5 m³ / s) August to October. The highest discharge measured during this period was 640 m³ / s (on February 7, 1996), the lowest 4.2 m 3 / s (on December 12, 1990).

At a measuring point ( location ) located 48 km above the mouth near Simnasho upstream of the confluence of Badger Creek at the bridge of US Highway 26 over the river at an altitude of 770 m (NAVD88), the mean discharge over many years was ( 1984-2008) about 4.5 m³ / s. The highest discharge measured during this period was 132 m³ / s (on February 7, 1996), the lowest 2.2 m 3 / s (on January 14, 2004).

fauna

The anadromous fish native to the area and the fish that spawn here include autumn king salmon , redband trout and mountain whitefish, as well as bull trout , summer steelhead trout and spring king salmon, which are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act .
