Warren E. Miller

Warren Edward Miller (born March  26, 1924 in Hawarden, Iowa , †  January 30, 1999 in Scottsdale, Arizona ) was an American political scientist and election researcher . He was a professor at the University of Michigan from 1956 to 1981 and at Arizona State University from 1982 until his death . In 1960 he published together with other authors under the title " The American Voter " a study of individual voter behavior in political elections in the USA, which is considered to be one of the most important works of electoral research .

Life

Warren Miller was born in Hawarden, Iowa in 1924 . After serving in the United States Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946 , he studied at the University of Oregon , where he received his BA in 1948 and his master's degree two years later . In 1954 he received his PhD from Syracuse University . His doctoral thesis was based on research he carried out from 1951 as part of a project by Angus Campbell's group at the Survery Research Center of the University of Michigan , and formed the basis for the work "The Voter Decides" published in 1954. He then became an assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley in 1954 , before returning to the University of Michigan in 1956 as an assistant professor, where he was an associate professor from 1958, a professor from 1963 and Arthur-W from 1981 .-Bromage Professor of Political Science acted.

In 1960 he published together with Angus Campbell, Philip E. Converse and Donald E. Stokes the work " The American Voter ", which was based on an analysis of the individual voting behavior of voters in presidential and congressional elections in the United States and to the present day as considered one of the most influential works of electoral research . At the University of Michigan, he founded the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) in 1962, and served as its director until 1970. In the same year he took over the management of the Center for Political Studies , which, in addition to the ICPSR, also included the American National Election Studies , which Miller co-founded in 1977, and other projects. In 1977 he was also elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1979/1980 he served as President of both the American Political Science Association and the Social Science History Association . In 1982 he moved to Arizona State University , where he was a professor until his death.

Warren Miller died in 1999 of complications from longstanding diabetes . At the time of his death, he was a second marriage and had a son and a daughter. A political science chair at the University of Michigan bears his name in memory of him . The American Political Science Association also awards a scholarship named after him in the field of election research, and the ICPSR has awarded the Warren E. Miller Award for services in the social sciences since 1993 .
