The Warsaw Marathon ( Polish Maraton Warszawski ) is a marathon that has been taking place in Warsaw since 1979 , usually in September.

organization

It is the second largest marathon in Poland after the Poznan Marathon .

In 2017, the leading Kenyan Recho Kosgei collapsed 800 meters from the finish, exhausted and dehydrated and could no longer get up on her own. No one came to her aid for minutes and a discussion in the media flared up as to whether an athlete can be helped here or whether he or she can expect a disqualification.

Route

The route begins at the Sigismund Column on Palace Square and first leads south via the Königstrakt to the Łazienki Park and then returns to the city center via Marszałkowska Street past the Palace of Culture . After a loop on Piłsudski Square , you will reach the Old Town Market. From there it goes over the Neustadt market on a loop west of the city center before it goes over the Danzig Bridge to the right bank of the Vistula . There you walk parallel to the river towards the south and return over the Świętokrzyski Bridge with a panoramic view of the city center on the left bank of the Vistula. The route now leads south to Wilanów , then north over the Łazienki Park to the finish in a small park on the Vistula below the New Town. In 2006 this course was slightly modified due to construction work on the Königstrakt.

The route is almost completely flat, with the ascent to the Świętokrzyski Bridge being the only notable incline.
