Warship ( German : Kriegsschiff ) is a British television series that was created in close cooperation between the BBC , the Royal Navy and the Australian Navy . Star of the series is the fictional frigate HMS Hero of the Leander class . In the Netherlands , the series was broadcast under the title Alle hens aan dek (German: Alle Mann on Deck ). It was first broadcast from June 7, 1973 to March 29, 1977 on BBC1 .

The series focuses on the one hand on everyday life on ships of the Royal Navy, on the other hand the Cold War , political crises or maritime police tasks such as combating smuggling .
Production notes
The series was filmed primarily on board HMS Phoebe , but also on six other Leander- class units . For some scenes , in Hong Kong and Singapore were filmed, served HMAS Derwent as a prop . Continued to participate in the filming of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal , the helicopter carrier HMS Blake and HMS Bulwark and the submarine HMS Andrew . Other locations outside the UK were Gibraltar , Malta and Norway .
The idea for the series came from naval officer Ian Mackintosh and BBC producer Anthony Coburn . The model was the British crime television series Z Cars for the police . Mackintosh was awarded the MBE for his work in 1977 . Mackintosh, born 1940, has been considered missing since a flight over the Gulf of Alaska on July 7, 1979 .
Merchandising
Based on the series, three books, a board game and a model kit from Airfix were created .
