Washburn is a small town (with the status " City ") in Bayfield County in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 Washburn had 2,117 inhabitants, making it the largest city in Bayfield County.

Washburn is located at latitude 46 ° 40 'north and longitude 90 ° 54' west and extends over 16.0 km 2 (of which 10.2 km 2 is land area) at an altitude of 211 meters above sea level. The city is located on Lake Superior in Chequamegon Bay .

Wisconsin Highway 13 runs through the city .

The city was connected to the rail network of the Chicago and North Western Railway , the train service was set before 1980.

The nearest larger cities are Duluth (approx. 110 km west), Wausau (approx. 260 km southeast), the Canadian Thunder Bay (approx. 240 km north as the crow flies on the other bank of Lake Superior) and the Twin Cities ( Minneapolis and Saint Paul ) in Minnesota (about 310 km southwest). Washburn is about 460 km north of Madison , the capital of the state. The closest metropolis is Chicago , approx. 680 km southeast.

The Gogebic-Iron County Airport is situated 75 kilometers east of the city at Ironwood .

The Chequamegon National Forest is near Washburn.

According to the 2010 census , Washburn had 2,117 people in 934 households. The population density was 207.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.15 people lived in each of the 934 households.

The city was founded in 1879 and named after Cadwallader C. Washburn , who was Governor of Wisconsin from 1872 to 1874.
